An energy audit is an inspection, survey, and analysis of a building’s energy usage. An energy audit is used to identify inefficiencies that can be corrected to reduce the amount of energy used by a building without negatively affecting its comfort and performance. A building energy audit is an important step to take to get a comprehensive understanding of the performance of your building and to help you prioritize your investments into energy saving measures. Conducting residential and commercial building energy audits is a good way to promote actions to save energy throughout your community. By undertaking energy audits on buildings your community, town, and/or county can identify the projects that will provide the most return on your investment and will contribute the greatest to reducing energy use and fossil fuel emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and providing jobs.
Funding from the EECBG program can include hiring technical consultants to conduct such audits. Energy auditors must be certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI), Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) or other certifying entity as approved by the Arkansas Energy Office. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Authority maintains a list of qualified energy services contractors (ESCOs) that may also be used to perform this work.
